Battle of mobile operating systems: Android N vs IOS 10
Big updates for popular operating systems - iOS 10 and Android N - are planning for release this autumn. Android will likely get version 7.0. We remember time when this OS monsters have gone on different ways but now they prefer to borrow some features each other. Nevertheless it is still diverse operating systems with own philosophy of future mobile world. Now we are going to compare not released Android and iOS in some different criterions and figure out which operating system will offer more features for users.
We are going to start from main updates that graphically present what developers of operating systems will bet on in nearest future. It is virtual reality for Android N. Condition for this has appeared away back: Google is actively sell not expensive Cardboard glassess that allows virtual reality for everybody usage. And the company open a whole VR-department with new models of such glasses. There are many gossips about fact that Google will start to produce more advanced devices for virtual reality like Oculus Rift.
Such gossips were forced when alpha version of Android N appeared: developers fastly detected in the core of operating system hidden partition with settings for VR and new permission - "ability for work while you are using apps in VR mode". Everything signs about Google is seriosly going to take market of devices and apps for virtual reality.
Apple company in it's turn chose another way - "smart" home. HomeKit service was available later for many compatible devices but now it will be a part of new version of iOS. For example, you will be able to manage your "smart" home directly from control center just with swipe from lower edge of a screen. "Home" application will allow you to automate your "smart" home with independently created scenarios that can be run manually or automatically.
Google and Apple chose really perspective and very different directions. Nevertheless nothing disallow to use VR on iOS and manage "smart" home with Android using third side applications so we acknowledge a parity among platforms.
Ergonomics and control
Before we start to compare in other categories make things clear - we are going to talk about 'clean' Android without any other features that was realised by third-party vendors.
Interaction with notifications was changed in new versions of both operating systems. You will be able to answer messages directly from notifications panel in Android N. Yeah, later we have "Answer" button but separate application opened after you pressed the button.
IOS will get the same function but besides text messages there will be available other actions according to application - for example, sending photos. Moreover new Apple operating system will be able to show 'extended' notifications with 3d Touch that are like dialogue fragment - it helps you to understand new message context. If message was get from Uber you push on this notification and get a map with geoposition of a driver. Despite of button for clearing all notifications was implemented in iOS 10, in total, notifications in this operating system is more functional than in Android. So iOS 10 get a point from us.
Widgets idea was simple and functional from the beginning that base principles haven't changed during many versions. Widgets haven't anything new in Android N.
IOS got widgets only in eight version but Apple couldn't solve its main problem - to be in a user limelight and show actual information. Widgets were placed in notification panel in iOS 8 and iOS 9, iOS 10 has got a whole screen for them on the left from first screen but they will be available in notification panel by right swipe. Thereby you will be able to open widgets only by call notification panel from an application (not from the desktop) and do a swipe just on empty part of a screen that could be a problem with many notifications. Such implementation is too complicated, so we give a point to Android N.
You should wander among settings for toggling Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in first versions of Android and iOS. Android get simple switches: its were placed in notifivation panel and you should press a button or make a swipe with two fingers for access its. Google will facilate access to switches in future update: the most important of switches will be placed in notification panel.
IOS got switches panel a bit later but it was implemented more comfortable and was opened with a swipe from a bottom. It will get 3D Touch support for icons at the bottom and second page for manage player where you will be able to choose sound source. But you won't be able to change icons from the first row but you will be able to do it in Android. Finally iOS and Android will have some particularities in fast setting implementation - comfortable and not - so we should to acknowledge parity
Also Android will get a multi window mode. Apple got ahead of Google with its implementation but iOS has such mode only for tablets while Android will have multi window mode for tablets and phones. Android get a point for its summary!
IOS 10 will get a function for removing reference application finally - an app will disappear from desktop by pressing red cross. Android had got such functionality before so Google operation system get one point
The last subject in the chapter - beta-versions releasing. Nexus-devices owners will be able to test advance versions from Android N by getting updates via air without any connections to PC and recovering the device. User should go to special web page and login with his Google account. IOS had got such function in seven version: user should install specific profile from Apple web site for taking part in testing. IOS 10 get a point from us.
Finally, total count in "Ergonomics and control" category is 3:2 in favour of Android N. Difference is minimal - look ahead for iOS ability to compensate miss!
Application "Messages" get huge update in iOS 10. Now the app had got preview for hyperlinks and videos, ability for replacing typed words with smiles, ability for sending messages with effects including text hiding. Many emoticons and stickers were added. Now other 3rd party applications could be integrated into "Messages": some of them will be able to add some content and other could be bots analogs from other messangers
But Google has an assymetrical answer announced in addition Hangouts and Chat another two new messengers - Allo for text messages and Duo for video calls. Certanly, new applications have got new features. For example, Allo will allow you to "scream" and "whisper" sending messages with different length. "Smart" messenger will offer variants of answers for incoming messages and show additional context tips based on your conversation: for example, if you are talking about restraunt Allo will show you the nearest establishments. Duo will have "knock-knock" feature that allows you to look at companion before you answer his/her call. This application are not in release versions now: likely it will be released with final version of Android N release and Google will explain users what messenger will be useful for their purposes. Final point will got to iOS 10 for better simplicity and user friendly.
Assistant Siri will get an update that was really wanted by iOS-developers. Now 3rd party vendors will be able to embed special actions in its applications that will be done with Siri voice commands. For example, Siri can be asked to call a taxi and this request will be done by Uber application and you can send a message with additional applications with reference app for messages.
In spite of Android has got its own assistant, Google Now, it goes on a different way making an accent on "card" GUI and divining user wishes. In our opinion Siri though outpaces Google now with functionality and progresses more actively so our point will go to iOS 10.
IOS 10 has got refined "Music" application: the app will get new neat design and ability for showing songs texts. Google Music as rival app hasn't got such function, so we give a score to iOS.
Many updates were implemented in "Photo" application. Now the programm can group photos according to people on them and make a mini-film from the best photos that could be edited and share it for friends. Unexpected feature will be ability for searchong photos by entering keywords of showed objects. For example, when you search for a "cat" then system of computed vision will analyse photos and show you appropriate. But such functions were implemented in similar application of Google before so we count a point for Android.
Finally score is 3:1 with iOS win - Apple did a great work updating its reference application for mobile operating system. In despite of some application of iOS 10 will get updates later similar applications in Android they are more comfortable in usage as a single ecosystem. All iOS users have got such apps but Android-phones manufacturers will be able to exclude such applications from theirs operating systems versions.
We mentioned not all innovations taking in view the most important features that can be provide common impression about new versions of operating systems. Every system will get only one really big innovation so we recognize a paruty between Android N and iOS 10 in "Innovations" category. But Android N won in category "Ergonomics and control" by count of new system functions and iOS 10 is leader in "Applications" category with many updates of reference applications
Different categories were taken by different operating systems: Apple attend standard applications trying to give them maximum functionality and Google works with customization and adding new system functions as multi windows mode. According to our opinion both mobile operating systems will get deserving updates that helps to solve tasks which are very important by platform's developers view. But what side do you endorse?
